What is ISEF?

Two years ago, we moved from DC to a podunk town in another part of the country. A couple of days ago, at the state science fair, my DC was fortunate enough to win a spot on the state team going to ISEF. (!) Their high school doesn’t have a record of sending students to ISEF, there’s no science club or teacher-coach to provide advice, and generally it feels like a lot (at least to me!). So I’m reaching out to the wisdom of DCUM for feedback on what my kid can expect and what I can expect and should be doing as a supportive parent.

The participants are rooming together, and there’s a state-level chaperone-organizer who is taking care of logistics, so DC’s hotel and transportation are all set. But beyond that, any tips for getting through the week successfully and making sure it’s the best experience it can be? As a parent, should I plan to be there as well for the whole time or part of the time? This is DC’s first year doing science fair-type stuff, so we really just don’t have any experience to draw on, and I don’t do STEM so it’s an unknown world to me!
