Order the part so it's ready when you take the car in. Then just... Drive it. It's not a big deal. It's a fix it ticket but the odds of getting pulled over are pretty small.

I got pulled over for speeding (dumb on my part) with a broken mirror I had taped sort of back on. The cop asked about it but was cool on it and the speeding and I just got a verbal warning. Sometimes they just want to make sure you're a normal person with insurance and a valid license. If all of that is good and you're not a jerk they are pretty cool typically

Drive it.

You drive the car to the repair shop. If they can’t replace it right away, ask them to tape it back on, or do it yourself. If you get pulled over, explain the situation.

This is exactly how they catch serial killers. Some harmless car issue. Get pulled over. Find a body or something in the trunk and bam, case closed.

It's really okay if you drive a short distance without the car being in compliance. In the unlikely case you are pulled over for it, the worst that will happen is you get a repair ticket which means you must repair the car within a certain amount of time. It's not a moving violation and it won't affect your insurance. If you are ever in a situation where you really feel the car is undriveable, you call a tow truck.

I cannot speak to the side mirror specifically, but I had something similar happen with a broken tail light. The light still worked, but someone backed into me and cracked the plastic cover—part of it even fell off.

I ordered a replacement through my dealer, but before it came in, I got pulled over by a MoCo officer just after leaving Grosvenor Metro. He had been sitting at the curb behind me, probably waiting to catch someone running the red on 355 south. No one did, but as soon as I turned onto 355 with the green light, he pulled out and stopped me.

After running my ID and plates, he gave me a written equipment repair order. No fine, but I had to replace the tail light, take the car to a police station so they could sign off on it, and then send in the form. Big hassle—super unlucky. Good luck on yours!

I'm aware that having a driver's side mirror is a legal requirement (MD). But some a$$hole knocked ours off and now I need to transport the car to the repair place to get the mirror replaced. What would you do in this situation? Would you drive the car there? Have it towed?
