The ID itself is fine. What’s not fine is the TSA potentially creating a problem by not recognizing that it is a legitimate Real ID.

Ok then send your kid to the DMV to make sure it’s fine, because 2 people telling you it’s not doesn’t sound fine, or send your kid his passport. He’s old enough to keep track of these things himself.

How is he supposed to go to the DMV when he’s in a different state?

When they scan it, it will confirm real ID standard or not. Be does t have anything to worry about. There are also plenty of TSA agents across the country who don’t understand that DC, while not technically a state, issues its own IDs. I even spoke to one TSA agent that thought Washington DC was adjacent to Seattle and the “District” was just an area where all of the Government buildings and Whitehouse were.

well in Virginia you have to pay 10$ extra to get the real ID. So you can still get a regular one.

Also, it's vertical bc he is under 21. So what is the other option here? I don't see one. Sounds like he should be fine.

Sounds like he just got cranky TSA agents. It's a total crapshoot and varies wildly even within the same airport.

2 of my kids have vertical real ID's and they've never had an issue with them. Granted, we're not in the DC area but they've flow all over with them.

DC started issuing REAL IDs in 2014. There is no chance a license issued in 2022 is NOT a REAL ID.

It is a REAL ID (which he got on his own at the DC DMV) according to DC and according to pics of examples I can see online. He started his travel (all by himself!!) at DCA without a problem or questions about his DC license. On the two other legs there was a question. He was able to travel just fine (all by himself!!).

If a young adult doesn't have a drivers license at all can't they just use their passport?

Arguing with TSA is unlikely to be productive. Sounds like TSA at both airports told your son that his DL was not considered a Real ID for their purposes? If so, time to get one which conforms to their requirements. https://dmv.dc.gov/node/1119101

My college kid has now been told twice that he will need to get a Real ID before May 7 by TSA when they look at his DC license. Once when flying out of Denver and now at LAX. From what I can tell it is the DC Real ID but vertical because he is under 21. It was issued in 2022, has the star in the corner, second picture, etc. He hasn't had a problem with it for flying previously. He is going to come home for summer in a few weeks, after May 7, but we have his passport here. I really don't want to send that in the mail to his dorm when he has a legal Real ID.

Am I missing something or is it just with TSA not recognizing DC IDs?
