Obviously I’m not advocating for killing adults with type 1 diabetes. But all other things being equal — if I didn’t exist yet either way — I don’t think it’d be crazy for parents to say they didn’t want their still-unborn children to eventually develop the disease.

Is it actually insane, since it’s not as if you know anything else about the children these embryos could become ahead of time? I have type 1 diabetes, so obviously I don’t generally endorse euthanasia for diabetics, but all other things being equal, I’d probably rather not have it?

My type 1 was discovered during the IVF process. Woman needs to have an A1C 6.5 or lower. When I got pregnant switched from Omnipod to Medtronic 780G for tighter control.

Eliminating children for type 1 today is insane considering how much technology has advanced

As a man with type 1 diabetes whose wife’s pancreas works fine, I can tell you diabetes was not an issue in conceiving children. Not sure what the circumstances would be if it was the other way around.

I don’t have diabetes, but I did IVF recently and there is a genetic screening you can use now to reduce the risk that your children get Type 1 diabetes. If you get 5 embryos from IVF and pick the lowest scoring one you can reduce the risk that your kids get type 1 diabetes by almost 50%.
