They con of attending Tubman is it’s a feeder school for CHEC, but is the only elementary school that does not do language immersion. People on this site love Deal though so no matter how good other schools may be or the teaching may be, that is what they recommend. Even though they also complain about how crowded it is or how their child hasn’t had a teacher in months (only subs).
If you want to know about a school, you should go check it out in person and actually speak to parents at the school. Don’t ask on DCUM, you will get nothing but conflicting information. Fun to read, but not really helpful.
Tell me more about this. What makes her so amazing? Have test scores gone up? Attendance? Staff retention? How many teachers quit mid year this year? Are kids no longer cussing out teachers with racial slurs and walking out of the room when asked to do work?
I'll bite, though you seem to have some preconceived notions about what the school is like but at the same time being ignorant about it. She has been there for years. 10 or so? Staff retention is great. My kids have been with the school for 4 years now, and I know so many of the staff/teachers just by virtue of having a kid there. All of my kids' teachers have been wonderful. The teachers seem to stay year after year after year; one kinder teacher has been there so long one of her former students is a kinder teacher as well. I haven't heard anything negative about the principal since my kids have gone there. She's a great advocate for the school, and the teachers have been working so hard to try to get DCPS to restore the funding cuts that have been threatened for the next fiscal year.
And yes, test scores are going up. Tubman is a wonderful school. It will have a beautiful building in another year, and hopefully it will have a new middle school feeder option (Euclid) in the coming years.

I think they are at the old Banneker building.

Oh my, don't even think about the comparison then -- go with Bancroft. The neighborhood is one of the most perfect neighborhoods in DC, the elementary school is very decent, and the middle and high are the best by-right schools in the city. We don't live there but have dayreamed about it many times. If you are starting fresh, go for it! good luck.

For sure leaning toward Mt Pleasant and Bancroft - the Spanish language immersion is actually a huge draw for us as he's entering kindergarten next year and we're a semi-bilingual household already. Thanks again.

Some cons of Bancroft:
- Somewhat overcrowded
- Difficult to impossible to lottery into for preschool unless you already have a sibling enrolled at the school
- Aftercare spots are somewhat competitive
- Spanish language immersion, so if your child is older (2-5 grade) it likely won't be a good fit
Some additional cons of Tubman:
- At a swing space while the school is being renovated next year
- Losing funding due to lower enrollment while in swing space
