Good luck, that last class is a doozy. Why it's better to do spanish 1B in 7th.

Yes - this at our school. I think this is the norm for the AP schools.

To clarify, given latter discussion, I mean this is the norm as far as order/progression. But most kids don’t continue to AP Spanish Lit. It’s rare. I don’t think it’s necessary for T25 admission, though it could be helpful if it’s your thing. I’m impressed with the kids who do but they are rare. And if it’s not your thing, no worries.

One AP world language class is going to be enough for the vast majority of kids applying to top schools, regardless of whether that one AP was taken in junior or senior year. It was for my kid who took AP Spanish junior year, no Spanish senior year, and has gotten into multiple T25 schools. I don't even think they offer an AP French class past the first one, so those kids who started French in 6th grade won't be able to take an AP senior year. The rigor of classes they take senior year, not whether they took a second AP Spanish, is what schools will look at.

Look at your High School's class profile to see how many kids took the AP Spanish Lang v AP Spanish Lit exams. Very few students take AP Spanish Lit in our HS.

And when you get to junior year, ask your HS college counselor whether it will matter at the specific schools that interest you.

You don’t have to do 2 AP foreign language classes unless your intended major is somehow related. The most elite universities would be a fine with a kid who did grade 11 AP Spanish did well on it and called it a day.

Depends who you ask. Some counselors will say need language all 4 years

This is true in other subjects too. And by HS as well.

AP Spanish Lit is a tough one. Only 10% of kids score a 5. And a lot of native speakers do take it, so you're competing against kids who have that advantage. But if your kid was good enough to be in Spanish 2 in 7th, maybe they can do it.

Meh. Not if a kid has already done well on an AP in that language.

My DD is in Spanish 4 in 9th grade and her teacher told her to do:
Spanish 5 in 10th
AP Spanish in 11th Lang
AP Spanish Lit in 12th

Much like kids do AP English Lang and then AP English Lit. My oldest did not take Spanish (he took Latin), and found AP English Lit to be quite difficult, because he is used to technical writing, not literary writing. Maybe it's the same sort of difficulty with Spanish Lit? Plus the language difference, of course.

Would this be correct (typical?) for a kid finishing 2A/2B in grade 7? Kid is not a native speaker so am not looking for the most rigorous path imaginable.

This will be dependent on which HS your kid will attend, and which Spanish classes they offer.
