I get wanting to get away from classmates to start fresh. But UT is so big. Plenty of places to get away from the past. But to attend a place like HP seems very shortsighted for long term life choices and career prospects. Is this decision being driven by money and wanting to focus on lax instead of studying?

No, it’s wanting to play a D1 sport in college over club.

What kind of connections would really matter in a right leaning university in NC?? plus lax, especially over a well-connected and significantly higher ranked Texas school? I can only see a benefit in HP if OP's DS wants to focus on what must be very niche career prospects provided by a HP/lax combo.

This. I have a kid at a demanding school. They love playing on their club team (athleticism, camaraderie, travel to different schools and tournaments), but they also love that they can skip a game if they have a major paper or mid-term they need to focus on.

Also, agree with others that High Point is a very specific student body and vibe. If you like it, good on you. But know attendance there telegraphs some very particular things.

From what we've heard, D1 is significantly more intense and you need to juggle the academic, athletic and social aspects of college. When you're a D1 athlete, if you want a successful athletic career and you want to graduate, the social aspect of college is what you sacrifice.

I think most (all) teens would know if they want High Point. You have to enjoy this sort of very specific experience/environment and hopefully have researched thoroughly. My ds did and knew this was not for him at all.

Unless - you have a family business and your child is planning on going into it. Then academics do not matter and the connections from High Point are fine.

I say go where the kid will be happiest, but be aware that High Point is divisive for many.

It has a reputation (and I'm not saying this is fair, just reporting) of being ultra right-wing and reactionary. That may fit your kid well and be beneficial to him in the long run, or he may end up defending or making excuses for his college choice throughout his career. Obviously, this issue could matter more in some fields than others.

Personally, I think UT in-state is an amazing choice, and if you can afford it, I would choose that in a heart beat. But you know your kid and your finances

High Point U (lax recruit, 100 percent covered) or UTexas (public for us, in state tuition, no lax team and would play club)?

Which would you choose and why?
