Unpaid internships are just a way for companies to take advantage of naive, desperate students trying to build their resumes. I never worked one, and neither will my kid. Either get a real internship or lifeguard and "court the ladies" (for you language-policing Karens).

This position is nonetheless illegal -- Hope the startup gets caught! They should at least pay him minimum wage. It's disgraceful they won't.

I really wish they'd do away with them. It so limits the applicant pool.

Not entirely correct. In a for profit company, "courts to examine the “economic reality” of the intern-employer relationship to determine which party is the “primary beneficiary” of the relationship." If it's the company, then it's paid, if it's the student, it can be non-paid.

At my DS's Ivy, they have a stipend. His trust fund friend, who spends lavishly, qualified for a stipend to help finance nonpaid internship in London set up through friends of parents but my DS who comes from a donut hole family wasn't awarded $$ for real internship he earned. But then trust fund friend has also figured out how to get financial aid, so there's that.
