And students already bound to commit.

Merit and ED to a Top 25? This isn't a thing.

Our son is at Emory (freshman) did ED and got merit aid. We weren't expecting it but we get half covered in merit aid which was a pleasant surprise as we weren't expecting any aid.

You sure it wasn't just financial aid? What is the name of the scholarship?

This is what I was wondering. Did your student come to campus as a scholar finalist? Isn’t that what all merit awardees have to do?

Not that I have any expectation that she’ll get one of these rare scholarships but DS very unexpectedly got full BK (yes yes I know not the same) so I’m just wondering if anyone on here has received merit when applying early. And yes I know not to count in it yes we are full pay etc etc. it’s simple wuestion - did anyone applying ED receive merit?

I cannot answer your question about merit and ED, but the two schools you listed struck me, because those were leading contenders for my kid, for precisely your reasons. And she also just wanted to be DONE and know by Christmas where she was going to land, so she did ED with success, and it was the right choice for her. No merit, but her general state of happiness since the ED notification in December has been worth it* (*we are lucky to be able to say that only because we have some generous relatives that allow us not to fret about funding).

Yes, my DS applied EA to Notre Dame and was offered merit. Apparently, it goes to the top 1-2% of incoming students. No separate application.

From my observation, you need t10 grades/test scores to get those coveted merit scholarships from vandy, Emory, washu, etc. I know 3 kids who got those full ride merit offers and they were all incredibly strong students who also got accepted to schools like mit, wharton, columbia, penn, etc. That $$ incentive was compelling to choose that merit path. Fyi, if you want to pursue that, keep an eye on the early scholarship deadlines bc many kids miss that...

Got merit at 2 T20 schools (50% of cost, 15% of cost) that we did not expect. Also got an admit to one of HYPSM which is where DD is going.

I am guessing most admits to HYPSM would end up with similar merit offers. If T20 think you might have an offer from HYPSM they would entice you with an offer.

Merit at T25 schools is really just blind luck. No one can count on it.

You still can’t count on it even if other kids have gotten it. Only ED if you are willing to pay.
