I almost teared up handing over the keys and driving off, I felt ridiculous! Has anyone else felt that way over a car? Still feeling sad tonight…

Why didn't you keep it and fix it later? It doesn't eat and cost you anything to put it in the garage for later. Been a great project for your kids to work on when they start driving or grandkids.

I had my last car for 15 years and sold it to Carmax. I was sad to see it go but it was the right decision.

Yes! My first car----the cutest VW Golf that I had through college and law school. It's been 30 years and I still miss her.

Same here OP.
Just traded in our car of 13 years.
We had many happy memories with it.
It kept us safe, took us to many great trips with the family, drove around our late pup its entire life, and was even our safe haven for outdoor dining with camping chairs at the height of the pandemic.
I was thankful for it all, and was very sad saying goodbye by goodbye last week.

Just curious what was the make/model of your car? How many miles on it

Yes, always.
We keep cars a long time. I get quite choked up cleaning out our stuff, handing over keys.

This isn’t weird! I was sad to see my first car go. I loved that little thing.

Me too OP, even though it was a clunker that my ILs gave us. Lot of great memories from trips etc in it, even though the new car we bought was obviously much nicer objectively. I hope it went to someone else who could appreciate it!

We get attached to our cars to OP. We even name them. The last car was the one our kids used to learn on and it was just time as there were repairs that just didn’t make sense. It didn’t make getting rid of it easier. We just chose to remember the good times.

I got very emotional when I traded in my first car. My uncle had helped me shop for it and taught me to drive stick on it. He passed away a year before I traded it in and I was overwhelmed to let it go, because all I could think of was the fun day we had had together when I purchased it.

I have money for the repair and put a significant chunk down on the new car. This car was almost twenty years old.

We also wanted a more family friendly car.

You can have 2 cars.

Should’ve kept it.

People do get emotional over cars. They do seek out replacements for vehicles they had in the past. It's very normal. Here's an example:

I just traded in the first car I bought myself - an old sports car that I loved - and I’m so sad! It needed an expensive repair and (between that and the tariffs) it made more sense to buy a new car / we’re entering a different life stage and needed a larger vehicle.
