My teen plays a summer sport and we do 1 week family vacation. Otherwise they work or volunteer and create their own fun with friends. Biking, pool, beach days/weekends with friends, a few concerts, etc… last year they took the metro to a Nats game for $7 tickets. Oh and did a Smithsonian museum day too. And then just random sleepovers and bbq’s.

Planning teen’s summers is strange. We are old school and it works for my daughter. She has better street smarts, critical thinking, independence and socialization skills.

We spent $6k for our 15 yo DD to do an intensive for her extracurricular

That’s particularly dumb given what happened today.

A few hundred dollars to join summer swim team. He will also be working. We might take a trip, but it would be relatively inexpensive and for the whole family, not just him.

16yo DD will be working. I might end up paying a few hundred for her dual credit classes unless she gets a scholarship/waiver. We might take a few day trips but we can’t leave for a long period of time due to her job.

$2500: Two weeks of overnight camp
$ 700: Other day camps

So $3200 all in. It’s still cheaper than when she was a toddler!

I have a senior. ~$600 for their contribution to beach week. They'll be working the rest of the summer, hopefully bringing in 3k

We did nothing last summer, and would have wanted to go somewhere this summer, as a family. But right now, with present instability, it's only going to come together at the last minute, if it does happen. We are not paying in advance for any programs or experiences. It's already a big enough deal for us to be paying for oldest's college and study abroad.

$2500 for a few weeks of camp and a class

$2000 + spending money for a 2 week foreign exchange program (we hosted back in Fall)

That's for a 14yo.

Saw this in the Elementary School forum and got curious what other families with teens are paying this summer (and if other people are regretting saying yes to a program in November when they didn't think their Federal job was about to be cut )

We spent $6k for our 15 yo DD to do an intensive for her extracurricular
