Fwiw our kid's K teacher says the sight words they are testing for in K are too advanced. At the same time, if the teacher has expressed concerns, I would take that seriously unless the teacher is inexperienced.

The vocabulary in the lessons is more advanced than I expected. Eg, the lesson I observed they were talking about “umami” and “taste receptors” which are big words for Kindergarten.

My daughter is doing fine with the short stories they bring home to read, and can read them without a lot of difficulty. However, she is an October birthday and the oldest in her class, and I think this would have been challenging for her if I think back to 10 months ago. But, since this is the curriculum, if she were having issues then I’d talk through that with the teacher.

My first grader loves CKLA. It is definitely challenging her in a way that Benchmark and Curriculum 2.0 did not challenge my older kids, but I think that is a good thing.

It's a more rigorous curriculum, yes, but why does that worry you? There are always going to be some kids who don't really start reading until 6 or 7 with any curriculum and that's okay, they're still getting a good foundation now. If the teacher is acting like it's a problem that not all kids are reading by the end of K, that sounds like a teacher problem, not a curriculum problem.

My kid is learning a ton in MCPS K. She has recently progressed from CVS to blending consonants. I'm super happy.

It doesn’t really matter how all Kers are doing. They are expected to be able to read some words at this point in the year.

Reach out to the teacher if you’re worried about progress.

Do you mean is CKLA more difficult than Benchmark, the old curriculum? (Eureka is the math curriculum.) If so, CKLA is on grade level and aligned to standards, whereas Benchmark was not. That's the difference you are seeing.

Yes. Op here. I got messed up, it was benchmark curriculum in prior years. CKLA seems a lot more difficult than benchmark. How do all kindergarteners doing in K with CKLA curriculum?

In this month of K, most of my kids can read 3 letter CVC words, we're exploring silent E, and have a small mix of sight words we focus on every week/2 weeks.

What is it that your kindergarten can't do? Remember all kids are different!
