How much was the jewelry worth? Unless it was very expensive, I would not involve the police. If she is dumb enough to give someone your number to use as a reference, answer their questions honestly. That’s all I would do.

I would not report her to the police. I give everyone one big mistake.

But I would have made it clear that she would not get a good reference from me. If someone were to call and ask about her, I would tell them I needed to let her go because she stole. Document everything, so if someone does call you and ask about it, you can be honest and don’t have to worry about her suing you for defamation. Do not—for your own good—go reporting this all over Nextdoor or anywhere else for that matter. And do not, ever, discuss anything that you can’t prove, like the friend being intoxicated or having something to do with “drugs.”

Hope she just goes away. I assume she is no longer in your house. If she is, then this is a whole other ball of wax.

Agree I would have filed the police report and presented the proof. Was the stolen item returned?

There was a similar recent post. Whether to warn others etc. I would.

When you are asked for a reference simply confirm hourly rate and dates of employment. Change all locks and phone numbers and change number for security.

I could be misreading OP's post but it sounds like this is an ex-nanny (i.e. not currently living in OP's house)?
