Same here. Nobody on DCUM is going to admit to doing this. But we also know several people who have double deposited in the past and we know several that double deposited this year already. All in the name of waiting another 30-60 days to decide.

Why would they already have double deposited? You still have a full month to decide!

dont double deposit. but putting down a deposit and then backing out is fine.

Yes, you have to submit a deposit somewhere by 5/1. If you get off a waitlist then you deposit there, and then promptly email first school to back out. Mine also called as had a nice relationship with OP and waitlist school didn’t require a deposit, so he just made sure it all went through fine before making that call.

No, nobody will rescind the offer for this. It's normal. We just emailed the admissions counselor. She checked that we were not ED admit (in which case it would have been different) and wished us good luck. That's it. It was emotional for me though, as I already loved school A. DS was absolutely thrilled as School B was all he wanted.

School A knows the game. They have their own waitlist....

We paid the deposit at School A and are waitlisted for a School B.
We don't think School B is happening and I wanted DC to start feeling committed to the school that accepted him without a deferral or waitlist- so I paid the deposit while he was sitting with me.
If he's accepted to the waitlist school, he'll have a decision to make and we'll lose the deposit. It's okay.

You have to deposit somewhere by May 1 or you're not going to college.

Then if you get off the waitlist elsewhere after May 1 you inform the first school that you won't be attending there and you lose your deposit.

This is not unethical and it's done all the time.

What is unethical is double depositing to two accepted schools by May 1 and then taking XX amount of time to decide.

Nothing unethical about backing out of a deposit. That's why it's just a deposit.

1) - yes. That's what we did last year. And lost the deposit of course.

Two scenarios here. Wondering how have you dealt with this in the past?

1) Kid needs to firm a choice by May 1st and submit deposit to School A. But kid is waitlisted at School B and might only hear from School B on May 14. Is it normal to submit a deposit on May 1 and then if accepted to School B, submit a deposit to school B and back out of School A?

2) Same question with EU/UK schools. Notification for a UK school might not be until after May 1. But also dont want to lose the ability guarantee placement at the US school May 1 in case UK/EU fails.

In a. Perfect world, we would know everything in advance of May 1, but wondering how much of an ethical fine line this is.
