Definitely not Rutgers. Not a great reputation.

Global health right now, but not sure the future, graduate in the global health or medical program or other fields.

DC is looking for school with school spirits and currently leaning toward UNC or UCLA but also understand with full ride she can spend money on graduate schools.

Financially we can afford out of state tuition but it’s hard decision with two full-ride options.

How would you decide or help guide the decision process with the DC? Thanks.

Just how rich/wealthy is your family ? If finances are a concern at any level, then limit your options to the two universities offering full tuition scholarships/ full ride scholarships. (Are the scholarship offers true "full-rides" (= tuition, fees, room, board, & books) or only full non-resident tuition & fees ? Any special advising , housing, or other privileges contained in the full ride offers ?

I have to agree. For undergrad the marginal difference in these programs is massively outweighed by the difference in $$. Give your kid $100k in cash to sweeten the deal and send them off to UMD!

Under these circumstances I would pick UMD (and I’m a Tar Heel). Maryland has great school spirit (esp in basketball, I’ve been to a few recent basketball games in Xfinity Center and they’ve been really fun, huge student turn out). Only con for Maryland is the freshmen dorm situation (some are super small with no AC) but I would still pick the full ride.

You can't do anything with a "global health" undergrad major. Take the free ride.

This is not even a question.

UMD

Don't discount UMD - it has more school spirit than you might think! Just had a great run in March Madness.

I would choose UNC. Great for public health. Cheaper OOS than UCLA. Much better college experience (has wonderful school spirit, a remarkably nice college town, etc) than Rutgers or UMD.

DC changes her mind on regional preference - ED a school that’s in 5 hour driving distance but then the last minutes before ED submission wanted to apply to a NJ university.

From my end thinking - if you want to pursue global health, you will most likely travel to various places, and maybe college in either UNC or UCLA will get DC comfortable with living in unfamiliar or far away places.

Take a full ride and then return to UNC school of public health for graduate school.

Undergrad in public health is what you make of it. Your child is clearly talented and motivated. They will be able to make opportunities anywhere.

The students profiled here have clearly made the best of their time at UMD:

Does your child have a regional preference?

I only have knowledge of UNC so will offer insight there. NC resident and have a public health major. Didn’t attend as wanted to spread wings more, but UNC has #2 graduate program in the field. Yes, I know that’s graduate. My kid at another school has had a lot of interaction with the grad school through clubs, public health initiatives, and taking meetings with their faculty. Don’t know if UNC is as gracious to undergrads, but mentioning it just in case it’s something you can discern.
