Undergrad is so random. Don't worry about it. Just tell them to work hard. Grad school are a lot more predictable result.

Yes, but we were sure to measure expectations at the get go so it was disappointment but not shock and tough to get upset about. Making sure kids realize that there are so many high stat kids these days that it becomes very difficult to handicap admissions chances.

Nyu is not top 25, so I kinda get it.

Hi OP, my son also is choosing between UMD Honors (in state for us), NYU and GWU interestingly! He only applied to one Ivy and two other Top 20 so was not surprised that he didn't get in, but was a tad bit disappointed. But we are all thankful that he has great options to choose from. You should be proud of your daughter!

Agree with others that those are excellent options (and NYU is very close to the top 25), but I do know what you mean. Everyone wants their kid’s hard work to be rewarded, and everyone has an idea of what that reward would consist of. So the adjustment can sting. Def agree with the PP to remind your kid and yourself that most applicants to top 25 schools are qualified to attend. Since there isn’t room for everyone, in the end it’s largely a spin of the roulette wheel. I hope she loves where she lands.

Dc did not get into a few places we thought he should, but it was all fine. Both dh and I went to both pricey elite private colleges and state schools between undergrad and grad, and I think we did a good job of not letting dc get caught up in status and brand.

Agree. I guess I have always known there are many many kids out there that "should" land T25s. Nothing in life is guaranteed. Work hard, hope for the best, if it doesn't move onto a plan B. There are probably wonderful things to get excited about in that plan as well.

Remind your kid why they liked NYU, UMD and GWU. Help them get excited about their choices.
Also, you remind them that the T25s are all highly rejective schools, so many many many many many top students were rejected as well. She played the lottery and didn't win. Time to focus on your excellent choices

Last year, mine got into some top schools but they really wanted HYP. It stung for a bit but it fades slowly. Once at the school they’ll thrive and you won’t think about it anymore, and the rare time it pops up you’ll question whether they even would have been better off knowing how happy your kid is now. Hope this is your story too.
