Never been to Bermuda

If you see Bermuda as solely a beach destination, you’re missing a lot. It has gorgeous beaches for sure but also lots of adventures hiking, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, natural caves, and many historic sites to explore in addition to interesting food, people, and culture less than 2 hours from the east coast.

The limitations previous posters mentioned are accurate in terms of expense and transportation but my kids love it.

Not everyone sees their vacation as a referendum on their social class, Victoria.

Just make sure you know your condo/resort's cancellation policy. We were supposed to go to PR over July 4th holiday last year and there was that hurricane that came through unexpectedly and quickly. It was such a pain to try and get out of our contract with the resort (we ultimately lost half and got half credit).

It'll be hot, but hotels will be cheap since few travel there then.

Go to Puerto Rico. It’s more fun, lots of aventure, beach/pool time, hiking, great food, etc. my recs for places to stay are:

Wyndham Rio Mar (good beach and across from El Yunque rain forest for hiking and swimming). Great restaurant around too like Lluvia Cafe and also Bungalu and Juice 18 Bar.

El Conquistador Hotel and Las Casitas in Fajardo, PR: has a great little water park in front of the ocean that’s perfect for an 11 year old. A private ferry that in 15 minutes takes you to Palomino island which is great for more beach time and food. Plus the hotel has a terrific secret infinity pool which I won’t tell you how to get there as part of the fun is discovering it by yourself! Great views from that hotel. Also two great restaurant right outside of it. La Estación for the best Puerto Rican BBQ that will knock your socks off with flavor. And Pasión por El Fogón which is great savory seafood and local dishes served by an outstanding chef. Also try El Pescador for a rustic experience.

Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach. Man o man what an outstanding place for beach and pool and spa time. Just go. It’s amazing. The Encanto Beach club sits on a beautiful protected cove, Positivo Sand Bar and other restaurants there are amazing. In the weekends the hotel has its own waterpark which is great for teens. And the Soa is…the best I’ve ever been to. It’s all outside. Even better if it rains.

There’s tons of hiking to really cool
places all over PR. El Yunque rainforest has hiking and delightful swimming holes and waterfalls, Cerró Meme is near Toro Negro Fireat where you can zip line and then hike the Cerro to the peak in the middle of the island. Looks like Europe from there. Not to mention in the South and West costs there are tons of hiking and waterfalls to bath in. My favorite is Gozalandia. Look it up. You’ll need a car.

Bermuda is much more expensive. Public transportation is a pain, there are buses, but depending where you stay, you can be a far walk from your hotel to the stop and still waiting a long time with unreliable times these show up. You can rent tiny 2 seater recreational vehicles (no car rentals allowed for visitors) for about 150 a day. Stay away from mopeds - deaths are pretty frequent for both island residents and visitors. Wealthy people arrive by plane and have no problem paying 500+ per night for hotels and about 150 per day for rec. vehicles. Normal people mostly cruise in and don't really experience and see the island that well, just the tourist trap dockyard on the far west side and hamilton and horseshoe beach and maybe st georges. depends on the kind of traveler you are.

Seem like entirely different islands. Interested in beach/pool time, but also walks/hikes, etc. Will have an 11yo with us.

Puerto Rico seems like it has a lot more to do, but maybe I'm missing something with Bermuda.

I'd welcome recommendations on hotels and things to do on either island!
