Wishing I knew the name, but my mom has it and we suspect her father did too. He died of a heart attack at 40 despite being fit and healthy. I'm also prone to stomach ulcers under stress and have had a meat aversion ever since I got my last one

What cholesterol mutation, out of curiosity? Dealing with one of our own.

One of my kids strives to be pescatarian (but wats chicken/turkey about weekly and very occasionally red meat.) I find dropping red meat is very easy, going fully pescatarian or vegetarian was more challenging because my other kid is somewhat picky.

I will note that if your cholesterol issue is with dietary cholesterol, you'll need to be careful about shrimp (which is a bummer because it's such a quick cooking option.)

Chicken is worse for you than red meat. Just saying.

We don't eat red meat at home anymore. All my pasta sauces are with turkey or fake meat and we eat more tofu and overall vegetarian meals as my kids do not like fish that much.

Making the switch due to how expensive good meat is, plus a cholesteral mutation my kids and myself have.

Trying to up your mercury, microplastics, and parasites intake? Limiting food choices like that is not healthy. Sure you can survive on it, but won't be as healthy as a balanced diet.

This plus the chicken being less expensive than fish. Cut out red meat if you want, but I don't know that trading chicken for all fish, all the time makes a ton of sense.

Last time I checked, chicken was less expensive than fish.

I think cutting back on meat or even cutting out meat altogether at home can make sense, but pescatarian implies they don’t eat it anywhere. I think if your concerns are cholesterol and the price of meat then cutting it at home but not putting restrictions on them outside the home makes sense.

I will also say that one of our kids is vegetarian and I think it has improved everyone’s diet particularly her picky siblings because it has led to us exploring new options and finding ones they will eat like lentil bolognese or satay made of soy curls or baked pasta with spinach that we probably wouldn’t have tried without the push from the vegetarian.

Ask your kids and husband if they want to go along with this. They may not want to.

Why would you do this to your kids? My mom served only chicken basically my whole childhood. Anyway my favorite meal
now is a big juicy steak!

I'm a pescatarian and don't buy or cook meat, so my kids rarely eat it at home. If your kids already like vegetables, I think you'll find the change to be pretty easy.

My older kid (7) doesn’t really like meat (save for the occasional hot dog or burger at a cookout) so that is easy. He loves things like rice and beans, pasta, mashed sweet potatoes, lentil/leggie soups, homemade pizza with vegan cheese, impossible burgers, etc. I try to put protein powder in his smoothies or homemade “ice cream” (frozen bananas, coconut milk &protein powder blended) for an extra protein boost. I load both kids up on fruits & veggies by giving them a sort of charcuterie plate before their dinner to snack on (big plate with all kinds of cut up veggies and fruits on it). They usually demolish it. My little one (4) does like meat but is just as happy w non-meat, and loves salmon (particularly smoked salmon/lox), shrimp, and chickpeas, and the banza chickpea pasta. Anyway, point is make the fruits & veggies primary, figure out a protein source they will eat, and fill in around the edges with other foods they like. And no need to be religious about it- it’s ok for an occasional exception (like if you’re traveling and food options are extremely limited).
