What was occurring in El Salvador vs the U.S. are very different things. And noting that crime doesn’t pay with gang murders vs kidnapping students on the street vs citizens doing minor things is very different. Further it’s one thing to build a prison to eradicate crime on your country it’s another to now be holding and actively seeking another country’s people.

There is a between advertising crime doesn’t pay vs turning it into a three ring circus. And when we keep letting the be private prisons for profit the driving force doesn’t become crime reduction and rehabilitation it becomes profit. Which in turns breeds corruption as history has shown.

I'd like to know who you mean when you say "the usuals suspects" so dismissively. Are you talking about the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the UN? Because a lot of us respect the UN.

The United States was founded on principles of liberty, justice, and equality. It is un-American to gloss over human rights abuses.

Expecting the attention? Bukele is the driving force behind it. His background is in marketing/advertising. His government produced the videos, not just the ones we have seen, the many before!

What is in for them? I mean, El Salvador has gone from one of the highest (the highest?) murder rate in Latin America to arguing that it is "the safest." They have rounded up gang members and jailed them and drastically reduced crime.

The benefits are obvious. But at what cost?
*human rights violations
*lack of due process
*random arrests to meet quotas

It is horrifying. The ends do not justify the means.
