Peche also a tough table but probably easier at the bar.
I would skip the French Quarter nightlife except for, like, a quick walk through a few blocks to see it.
Frenchman Street suggestion above was a good one! And take a streetcar uptown and walk around near Magazine Street.

If you're there by yourself get dinner at the bar at Herbsaint, Restaurant Rebirth, or Restaurant August. All are very hard to get a table at normally but easy to sit at the bar.
Also if you like wine I highly recommend Pluck Wine Bar. Fantastic cellar and very knowledgeable staff.

Get a trolley ticket at the drug store. Pick up the trolley out to the garden district on your side of canal street (and bourbon or thereabouts-- look for the tracks and the queue). Go out as long as you like. Cross the street and come back in. Nice even on a rainy day, and good people watching.

If you want to sit and work, Cochon Butcher is great. Also, French Truck coffee has a lot of locations. Definitely shop and stroll Magazine St.

Don’t go there alone though.
Lots of crime in NOLa
You also need to have beignets one morning at Cafe du Monde.
Omg, it’s fine. No one is going to attack you in broad daylight in the cemetery.

I enjoy Ruby Slipper cafe for breakfast and Court of Two Sisters for a lunch buffet.
Other things to do - do a ghost tour. Do a cemetery tour (do the tour with Nicolas Cage's pyramid tomb. I forget name of cemetery).

Cafe du Monde for beignets and iced coffee. When I was in law school I used to go there in the morning and study.
Do a walking tour of the quarter. There is so much history.
I know you wanted food you can’t find elsewhere, but my fave down near the quarter is Port of Call for burgers. I head there every time I’m in NOLA. For fancier food that is definitely NOLA, try Galatoire’s. People make fun of Pat O’s for being touristy but everyone loves it for a reason.

Walking around the French Quarter at night is pretty cool. They block off a few streets and there are bands playing, street performers, etc. Pat O'Brien's is good to get a drink at, Felix's Oyster Bar, too.

Do you have a few hours to do a bayou boat tour? They will pickup from your hotel.

The WWII Museum is amazing. You could spend hours there and still not see it all. Also Mardi Gras World.

I'm going to New Orleans for work and will have some downtime. Hotel is next to the Superdome on the side toward the French Quarter. I've never been to Louisiana. What should I know? Especially, looking for recommendations on:
What and where to eat, especially looking for cafes where I can get some work done or cuisine that you can't really get anywhere else
Unique local experiences or historic sites to explore during the downtime (especially weather-proof options as it looks like it might rain)
