There's a whole section in the One Book with this information, including important dates. As for roommates, they can find one on their own or go random by filling out a profile (same website as the housing contract)

How do they go about finding a roommate on their own?

DP. Through social media. Seems like girls often find their roommates this way, while boys will more often go random (have the school match them with someone).

NP. Mine did that as well. Worked out well to eat lunch while on campus for classes.

I hate that the kids have to decide so early in the year, but all the complexes raise their rates.

40% more than the dorms? Wow. That seems high. My youngest is strongly considering JMU. My oldest is at W&M where off-campus housing is also hard to find, but her off-campus has not been that much more.

We have one student at W&M and another at JMU. I think off-campus housing is significantly more expensive at W&M than JMU. There is a pretty broad range of options in Harrisonburg as well.

FYI - CNU guarantees housing on campus through junior year and PLP students live on campus for all four years.

My kid lived on campus the first two years and signed a lease for an off-campus apartment for next year. It's not common, but there are students who live on all 4 years.

Lots of off-campus housing options after freshman year. But your freshman will need to figure it out by the winter break. This is not at all unusual for most colleges, btw
Also, the cost of living is much lower in Harrisonburg.
My kid has lived in Grace Street since sophomore year and loves it for the convenience to all their classes. But most kids go off campus for housing.

Freshman have to sign an on-campus housing contract for sophomore year in October (seems really early) then they choose housing in April based on order of who signed up first. There is a waitlist too. I read somewhere that 30% of freshman stay on campus the next year, but not sure.

If you have a student at JMU, what is the housing situation after freshman year? Can student live on campus all four years? Is off campus housing hard to find? Is it $$? I know more and more larger publics are. having housing issues with such high enrollment and my kid is interested in JMU - a lot of the schools being considered have less than ideal housing situations after freshman year, and some even freshman year are hard to come by.
