Inland empire is not coastal LA. Hot and smoggy during the day. Some of the dorms are Pomona not air conditioned and wild fires are a concern, as students learned this year.
That said, I’d let your kid fly out and take a look on Pomona’s dime before deciding.
Adding train from Pomona to LA takes one hour 15 minutes according to google.
