You have enough time. Just mail it and save the $60 expedited fee. Or if it is a renewal, just do it online.

The appointment is for either an emergency (death in the family) or urgent travel (you booked a flight but passport is expiring soon etc)

Just did this recently - if you are traveling within 14 days, you can book an appointment at the passport agency. You will need to show proof of airline ticket or hotel booking. If either the booking or the flight is on the day of or next day from your appointment date, you will get back the passport same day. If it is after that you will be asked to come back 2 days later for the passport.

I just did two expedited passports - one took 18 days from submitting at the post office to receipt of the passport, the other a few days longer.

Adult application you can do online.
Child application must be in person. You can go to the MLK library in DC without an appointment. Check the website for the hours.

You can’t walk in unless you are traveling within a week or two. Just do expedited.

Like the one in the middle of DC? Maybe near Farragut Square? My friend has been there twice and then straight to airport at 5 pm.
I wouldn't do it, but she has good nerves.
Mail it in, you have time.
