Not in the US in 2025.

My entire family is of a different political persuasion than mine, though none of us are on crazy fringes. I’m not going to cut everyone off. We are able to have civil discussions if the topic comes up but we usually have plenty of other things to talk about.

I had an aunt who would use anti Mexican slurs and then was shocked my brother didn't want her around his part-Mexican kids. People don't seem to understand there are consequences anymore.

It’s hard when politics doesn’t really mean politics anymore. We’re not arguing about tax rates. One party wants to fundamentally end American democracy.

I can't personally. Politics isn't just some hobby, it involves fundamental beliefs and values. Believing in LGBT rights for me isn't just some amorphous thing, it's my beloved sister and associating with people who thinks she's less than goes against my very core values as a person.

If you have a friendship with someone who has strongly held political beliefs in the opposite direction of yours, has the relationship endured? Is it possible to separate the person from the beliefs? Don’t the political beliefs suggest something about them as a person?
