You could always rent a condo in Kiawah and just pop into the city one day, but make the trip more resorty. It won't be "beach warm" (probably) but if you rent through the resort you'll have access to the Night Heron pool, which is heated.
Also I think exploring the suburbs of Charleston can be fun. Mt Pleasant is super cute (eat at Post House Inn) with some great shopping, there's a trampoline park around there somewhere, and I love a day trip to Sullivan's Island -- eat at Obstinate Daughter.
