My kid is in with nearly identical stats (1420). So I would assume 1400 is the tipping point without a hook.

Take care to apply EA (if not aiming for ED). Acceptances seem better there. Make sure she checks her college-specific portal (not common app) to be sure all parts of the app package are received by deadline. RD seems very tough.

Kid 1 is currently a senior at Tech (2021 HS grad) and had a pretty abysmal SAT score. 1090 maybe? I don't totally remember but it was definitely in the thousand range. Lots of APs GPA over 4.0 and lots of EC. Initially, waitlisted but got in. College of Life Sciences.

Kid 2 was accepted into Engineering with a 1350 SAT. GPA way over 4.0, APs all 4s and 5s very few EC. Ended up going elsewhere.

My instate FCPS child is currently WL for business with a 1480, 3.8 GPA, 11 APs (all 4's and 5's so far).

Another one of my kids was WL with a SAT of 1550 4.6 GPA and 12 APs and massive leadership/ECs.

Both kids got into FAR higher ranked schools for their majors so VT is a mystery to us as to what they want.

I think admissions varies widely by major. Pick something obscure if you really want to go there.

Someone found a while ago on the VT data website that the admissions standards were the same for STEM and non stem (or CS or engineering vs non CS or engineering). Yes, big shock, but that's what the data said.

My DD (FCPS) applied TO and was accepted this year and invited to the Honors College. Weighted GPA is 4.2, 11 APs, multi sport athlete, good leadership, etc. Psych major.

I am concerned because we hope her SAT score can help demonstrate her college readiness since she had a dip in her gpa due to a health issue.

I was not aware of how much importance they put on the short form essays. My older kid applied to VT a few yeaes ago, and those short essays were challenging. I will make sure my current HS junior puts a lot of effort into them. Thank you for that tip.

My instate female went TO had 10 AP, business extracurricular up to the national level, leadership, year round club and varsity sports, charity work and employment and was waitlisted for business this year.

She did have a 4.1 which I guess wasn't enough.

And her essays were top notch. VT essays are specific and difficult and there are 4. She rocked them.

My in-state FCPS student was waitlisted for business last year. He had a 1370 SAT, 4.1W GPA, and was an IB Diploma candidate.

Mine was admitted OOS with 1390 SAT, 3.9 GPA, 7 AP/IB, summer job and leadership role in HS and 1 sport. Several friends also admitted with 3.5 GPAs and went TO. I think in state and OOS makes a difference though.

Why are you worrying if her score is above average? Honestly, SAT is not a major factor in admissions, which is why test optional is a thing. Grades and rigor are way more important, and VT has repeatedly hammered home the importance they place on their short form essays.

My DD is a junior and would love to attend VT after high school. She will major in some kind if humanities field, not decided yet.

I know the average SAT score at VT is around 1330, but I want to assume that score is a bit inflated due to all the engineering students If your student was admitted to a non-stem major, what was their SAT score?

We are trying to see what her chances will be. She’s had some health issues, which will be documented on her common app, so her GPA is not stellar. She will have more than 100 hours of community service, a summer job and two varsity sports, plus AP in all five main subject areas by senior year. Her current SAT score is in the mid 1300s.
