I had this happen a few weeks ago except it was night. At like 7:50, the pilot said "we'll be on the ground in 10 minutes". 30 minutes later we finally landed. I travel a lot and am not a nervous flyer but the crash messed with my head... I was borderline having a panic attack as we flew very low with no explanation as to why we hadn't landed yet. I thought we were circling but I looked at the flight path later and we'd gone all the way out past Dulles and back.

This. Use Dulles instead.

I am okay with this. That crash was inexcusable.

Since the recent crash, yes, DCA has a full ground stop if any nearby helicopter.

They also stopped training flights from across the river, so most helo activity now is VIPs.

What does this mean?

The helo involved in the crash was a trianing flight going to/from Bolling that is right across the river (and in the flight path for DCA). They'll no longer do training flights from there. Just "real" flights, and ground stop DCA when doing them. T

They now ground stop DCA when there's a VIP flight (usually the president) flying by helicopter nearby.

Anyone at the airport know why? Tuesday 8:15 pm currently.
