My kid had a math class at RM where there are not enough chairs and some kids sat on floor. But I think it was more that one class was oversubscribed but they couldn’t open a second class for whatever reason. A lot of the HS are over capacity but I think it shows up more and less in different classes. No one is sitting on the floor in the Latin class, for instance.

Overcrowding shows up more in the playgrounds, buses, cafeterias and bathrooms. For the little kids, the overcrowded playgrounds are just so sad — you hear kids saying they waited in line 15 minutes to do the monkey bars, or waited all recess in line to play nine square. Or that there are 60 kids trying to play one game of soccer. Our ES expanded classroom space so was not over capacity but they did it by cutting the field space in half — so you had twice as many kids with half as much space to run around. Not a good solution.

My kids attended Rachel Carson ES when there were over 1,000 students and enrollment was 150% of capacity. Every kid had a desk/table and chair.

School capacity info is all online on the MCPS website. There are schools well over capacity and also schools well under capacity. Were MCPS to rezone schools based on capacity/crowding it would be easy enough to solve the overcrowding right now with no new schools needed especially at the ES level.

Which HS?

This is not true. Schools are overcapacity but this is a lie. Troll!!!

Yes it’s true. They don’t have enough teachers to add extra sections.

And new construction of schools takes time. They still haven't completed boundary studies for Woodward high.

Here is the article: https://wjla.com/news/local/overcrowding-mcps-school-pta-parents-school-board-ashburton-elementary-school-bethesda-maryland-md-overcrowded-staffing-concerns-hilary-swab-students-sit-on-floor-montgomery-county-public-school-full-time-psychologists-special-education-teacher

The reports of kids sitting on the floor are not substantiated, for what it is worth. Yes, Ashburton is above capacity but only by about 100 kids which is less than a lot of schools around MCPS.

Basically, the only solution to overcrowding is new construction and better distribution of kids from overcrowded schools to underutilized ones.

So a class of 15 1st graders got spilt between 3 other 1st grade classes. Not enough desks to suddenly add 5 more kids for the day so they sat on floor or wherever when doing seated work.
It sucks, but not sure what other options would be.

They could at least have brought the chairs from their usual classroom to use in other classroom for the day

It was true at Kennedy when I taught there and true at Blair for at least 8 years over a 13 year period that older DD and DS attended.

At Kennedy, I got rid of my desk and brought in a narrow table that provided space for two more students to work beside me.

Eastern MS is technically under capacity, but academic classes of 31 students are common. This is because of tiny classes for reading interventions and special education. We need more staffing.

Wonder how many Ashburton parents would support redistricting?

There are overcrowded schools at all three levels, but there are also under capacity schools at all three levels.

Overcrowding has kids sitting on the floor at MCPS school, parents demand action. This was the title with a photo of Ashburton ES. Is this true at ES or more likely in the high schools where student populations closer to 2000+?
