How is the principal of a school with 2200 kids going to prevent a fight from happening in a park a few blocks away during school hours? Should he be personally hunting down every kid who is absent to make sure they're not playing Jets and Sharks in the park? How is any administrator responsible for the fact that some half-wit brought an AirSoft gun in his backpack to show off?

Obviously there are real problems that need real solutions. But if you think that pushing out the principal is the answer, take a look at the rest of MCPS.

He must be tired of being tired, too. Not that it matters at this point but has anyone listened to any call(s) to police leading up to the decision to lockdown after an incident at a nearby park? Apparently MCPD suggests or doesn't suggest a lockdown and ultimately Principal of a school makes the decision to lockdown. What was MCPD's suggestion that day? If Principal hadn't called a lockdown that day, would parents be tearing him about not making that call? No one wins and no one is feeling better after repeated lockdowns.

Btw, was it ever reported which schools the other kids who showed up at the park attend? It's highly unlikely they were OLOL students. But why were only BCC students called out? Do you know if others were from an area HS, MS or from elsewhere?

So no more special events at any of the high schools going forward? They can't practically take attendance during those events.

I've had kids at a couple different MCPS high schools, and know others families in other MCPS high schools, and I respectfully suggest that Dr. Mooney is not up to the task. He's a really nice person, I like him as a human being. But compared to the other Principals I've interacted with, he just doesn't have the iron fist and authority it takes to get things done. Principal is not the job for him. I saw how Jennifer Baker, the former Principal of Walter Johnson, dealt with discipline issues. Swiftly and as severely as she could, to make sure the same protagonists did not make the same mistake twice. This is what it takes when you're in charge of a volatile building with thousands of adolescents.

Dr. Mooney has a background in special needs education, and one of my kids has special needs. I entirely understand the point of restorative justice. I entirely understand that BCC has more discipline issues than WJ or WW or some other "W" schools (but not more than Blair, for example). But there comes a point when you cannot look the other way. You have to act. And Dr. Mooney has seemingly been hampered at every turn, when another Principal would not have been.

There is always a risk that a new person might be worse than the current person in the job. But there have been too many discipline issues recently, and too much wishy-washiness at the top, to hesitate any longer. I support the search for a new Principal for BCC.
