They do this? What grade is DC? (Going to send DC to private in Sept 2025)

My kids went to Bank Street and they did this in the upper grades. They had them take the ERBs so they could get experience with standardized tests and have a sense of where they may be scoring on the ISEE.

Is this a K-8? If you intend to apply to private high schools that use the ISEE for admissions, you should have him prep for the test. Scoring in the middle stanine unprepared isn’t a red flag that means he needs support outside of the classroom, but you want better scores than that if you want him to have a wider range of options when applying to private high schools.

op - that's kind of my thinking and my concern. Eg, would it be better to send them to public and then use the extra funds to get them tutoring? Having them in private and still needing tutoring seems insane to me. The school is $65k a year.

Why would you need tutoring if your child is in the 50th percentile? Parents need to accept who their child is. Are they happy? Are they getting all their work done? When they have a test are they comfortable taking it because they know the material? Do they look forward to school? These questions matter.

...or you could send them to a school more interested in explicitly teaching content. Progressive education does not work well for many students.

If the school is using the phrase “where they are at,” I would seriously worry about what they are teaching my child. To me, it is unacceptable for a school to communicate with parents using poor grammar.

I think it is fairly typical. Going to private doesn't mean less tutoring needed.
