My child used it for part of a day for about a semester and it was nothing fantastic so I think if they are revamping it that is a positive.
They aren't redoing the virtual program. They did a fake BLP program and its a joke. They only have a few teachers for ES, MS, HS and its the bare minimum and kids aren't learning much.
There’s a new law that’s been proposed in the house of delegates that will require MCPS to restart the virtual program, so they really might redo it if the bill passes.
And, that would be great if it passed, but its not somthing families can count on till it passes and MCPS agrees. MCPS CAN restart the virtual program and expand it for our kids who cannot get classes in their home schools they need but they don't want to. The cost is not very much compared to how much money they waste on other non-educational things.
Just to clarify, if the new law passes, whether MCPS agrees or not would be irrelevant. The law requires every district to have a virtual program, so it would be on MCPS to do it (and to figure out how to fund it). They could join another county’s virtual program and create a syndicate that way if they opted to not create the infrastructure within MCPS.
Financially joining another county may not make sense as they'd have to pay that county. They have the infrastructure.
The financial notes to the bill say that MCPS saved about $5M this year by not having the virtual academy. I guess it’s a question of whether they would have to pay another county more than that to have MCPS students join their program that’s still up and running now.
They also lost over 300 kids and their funding. It would be hard to get it up and running again. And, another county would have to do massive hiring if it had a huge increase in numbers which might not work. Usually school systems charge full amount for kids to attend out of area, so that would cost more. They aren’t bringing it back anytime soon.
