I chose religious schools for my kids but here are some of my recommendations based on the tours that I took. You can research these and visit them to see what you like.

Merritt Academy - a bit further away from Oakton than the others but I thought the PreK 4 year old rooms looked good
Appletree on Blake Lane - some posters on this website stated that they were using Abeka curriculum; don’t know if it’s still true, you may want to ask; they didn’t mention any curriculum on my tour
Oakton Kindercare - very expensive
Hunter Mill Country Day School - classrooms look kind of old

If I must choose, I would pick Merritt Academy.

Heard a lot of good things about Appletree II and Hunter Mill Montessori but never toured. Appletree II requires you to pack a lunch everyday, and I wasn’t interested in Montessori. Definitely check them out if you don’t have issues with those things.

If you haven’t, you should join Vienna Moms. You can get detailed preschool info in the group, as well as other info about living in Oakton/Vienna. The FB group was very helpful when I moved to the area.

Kindercare Oakton is great!

Oakton is lovely but there are limited childcare options, IME. Even the in-demand standalone preschools are preschool in the morning and daycare in the afternoon, and a lot of them have lengthy vacation breaks. If you can afford it, your best bet will be a private PK-8 or PK-12 school with aftercare. Otherwise, people seem to like Hunter Mill Country Day.

I'm more on the Vienna side of Oakton; if you are more on the Reston side then maybe there are more choices in that direction.

Avoid winwood in Fairfax. I’ve heard good things about kiddie academy Reston and Kindercare Oakton.

Hi all - we are moving from California to Oakton (22124) in late May, and looking for preschools for our 3.5 yr old. Would prefer play based if possible, prefer no religious affiliated programs, and need full day options as opposed to half day. Open to areas around Oakton too since options in Oakton look more minimal. It's a tight timeframe and I know we will probably be on waitlists for a bit.. Any suggestions would be very helpful!
