Some people will be critical of her for being young. They would also be critical of her for being too old at whatever point they determine. Trying to time parenthood so that critical people don’t criticize you is a losing game. They are going to criticize.

Also, PSA, she might not get to choose. Maybe she will have difficulty conceiving. It’s one thing to know your hoped for scenario but you don’t know what will happen.

Some thoughts:

1. I had my first at 25 in grad school, after 2 years of marriage. Your daughter's reasoning is entirely accurate... however, it's my firstborn who has autism and severe ADHD, not my other children. He was born premature, and my husband (a doctor) thinks that part of the reason for his prematurity was overwork and stress. I hope your daughter has a better work-life balance.

2. I developed a medical condition after 30 that made having kids nearly impossible. My last viable pregnancy was when I was 30. You never know what's going to happen later in her life.

3. To my dying day, OP, I will probably think of my children's births as "happening yesterday"!

I had my kids at 27, 30 and 33 and so glad I didn't wait any longer.

Why does is matter if you are financially secure? Is she and her fiancé?

As a 50 year old with a 5th grader, I think it’s a great idea if her DH is on board. They will be empty nesters by my age.

I’m 40

Almost every woman I know had their first baby at age 30–32. There was one couple from grad school who had a baby at 26. Everyone else felt like it happened right at 30. After I moved to the suburbs was the first time I met couples who had first baby in late 30’s early 40’s.

I think having a child at 28 would make her a young parent but not enough to matter.

I was 28 when my first was born. Among other moms, I was on the younger side but not the youngest. And a bonus: empty nesters by age 50!

I wish you weren’t serious, OP…but I fear you are.

Eye roll.

Most importantly, I think this is her decision.

I was 26 in this area (early 40s now) and I would not say I was going through parenthood with friends for the first few years, but I have parent friends now.

No regrets. I love being at this stage of life and my kid appreciates having parents that would never be mistaken for grandparents.

I am not sure what your concerns are given her relationship status, financial situation, desires, and reasons.

Peak fertility is in a womans 20s and is also linked to lower risk of genetic disorders. Older fathers is linked to autism. It’s also said that having a baby in your 20s is “easier” on your body / easier to “bounce back from”. These are all the points my daughter who is 26 and wants to have a child by 28 makes. We are financially very secure and she is engaged /
will be married by then to a great partner for her. My question is- do you think socially / in this area that having your first kid by 28 is too young to have your first these days? I feel like I just got through parenthood myself!
