Otherwise your kids will perceive you keeping secrets, and feel caught in the middle. They hate feeling like they have to cover for a sneaky parent. Worse, they start to take on lying characteristics of the sneaky parent.

I meant not talking this over with the ex and figuring out whether it's okay to tell the children is not normal. You don't necessarily need to seek permission from the ex depending on the circumstances but you should at least inform so the ex is aware.
This isn't about the ex although it would be decent if the man or woman thought about the ex. It's about the kids and the ex should be aware of the impact this might have on the kids and discuss with ex.
