She’s trying to avoid either a Congressional repeal of Home Rule or, more likely, intensive Congressional interference with city legislation and actions.

Disagree. She should give way on unpopular issues where many people agree with Trump, so we can fight him and win on the most important issues.

Fight him in order to keep crime high and homelessness camps everywhere and you will just lose.

Yes. Supporting idiotic social policies is not helpful strategically.

+1.

I read the article and Bowser had the nerve to say this:

"It's misleading to suggest to anyone that if you're violating immigration laws, that this is a place where you can violate immigration laws," Bowser said. "You are vulnerable to federal immigration enforcement."

What exactly is wrong with this statement?

What is wrong is that Bowser said and campaigned in supporting the opposite view:

"We are a sanctuary city because we know that our neighborhoods are safer and stronger when no one is afraid to call on our government for help, and when our police can focus on protecting and serving,” Bowser said in a statement last night. “The values, laws, and policies of Washington, D.C. did not change on Election Day. We celebrate our diversity and respect all D.C. residents no matter their immigration status.”

That is not evolution. It is opportunism. A betrayal!

In Dante's Inferno, the Ninth Circle, the “lowest, blackest, and farthest from Heaven,” is reserved for the sin of treachery. The worst sinners, in his underworld, were the traitors—those who betrayed their loved ones, their country, and their God.

There is place in the Ninth Circle for Bowser.

Because it’s cowardly.

A real mayor would defend residents of the city.

I understand trying to curry favor with the new administration, but has Bowser actually gotten anything in return?

Politicians are supposed to represent the will of the voters. Seems like that's happening, even if a limited subset of U.S. voters, i.e., D.C. voters, voted differently. Their policy preferences lost out at the national level, and since D.C. is a federal enclave it seems reasonable enough that the will of the voters whose party won the White house should prevail over local ideology.

I assume it’s because she’s said the opposite before. Turns out she is an opportunist, too, like most politicians.

So what? She's "evolving," like most politicians (e.g. Obama) are forced to do.

I don’t think DC can do it though, leniency is too deeply entrenched, it takes more to follow through. I mean, are 25 year old criminals still treated as children under DC law, or have they changed that yet?

"Mayor Muriel Bowser is retreating from public stands against President Trump. . . .Bowser no longer uses the phrase 'sanctuary city,' she said last month, 'because I think it is misleading.'"

https://www.axios.com/local/washington-dc/2025/03/07/sanctuary-city-bowser-trump-deportations-ice

First the removal of Black Lives Matter plaza. Now, the denial of sanctuary city status. Beautiful!!

Trump owns Bowser. DC will be Great Again!

More to come. Stay tuned.
