Honestly? If you "tried for ages" and this is all you came up with, you shouldn't own a dog. It's not that hard to research a breed that might be a good fit for your family and search for a rescue specializing in that breed.

Some of you just shouldn't own dogs. You don't have the cognitive capacity to take care of yourselves, let alone another species.

I volunteer for a rescue, there is always couple poodle mixes available, they just get adopted pretty fast

No, I think it's very irresponsible to do this unless you are a breeder—an ethical breeder. Before I had my dog neutered, I was asked a few times by random people if they could breed theirs with mine. HELL NO!

The world needs so many things, and more puppies is not one of them.

My grandma did this. One, you have to understand just how much this costs. Most breeders barely break even, someone like my grandma who mostly gave puppies to friends and family, it cost a significant amount. My grandmother did the whole thing proper with genetics checks, proper registration, and proper stud fees. That's not cheap. Backyard breeders often skimp on those but they end up risking health issues.

Two, it is an insane amount of work. When her dog had a new litter we'd all pitch in on cleaning. Any puppies that had health problems basically needed 24 hour care that we did in shifts.

Three, it's emotionally draining. Things can go wrong and sometimes you can try and try but a puppy will die. It can also cause stress to the mom dog and change her behaviorally.

My grandmother liked it but she had significant animal experience growing up on a farm, she could afford the expense, and we all pitched in to help.

Nope. We have no business breeding a dog. And apparently she would be an excellent candidate but absolutely no. There is no upside for her and based on our contract with her breeder, we could owe a considerable sum to the breeder.

All I see in shelters where I live is pit mixes. Curious if anyone has considered breeding to give puppies away
