My DD (a junior) LOVED Tufts when we visited and it is as of now among her top choices. She has the stats for higher ranked schools but loved the collaborative vibe and proximity to Boston. Her tour guide was fantastic and she spent an extra couple of hours just walking around--she said the students were extremely friendly and raved about the professors and inclusive nature of the school. We'll see if it stays at the tippy top of her list but I could totally see her applying ED there.

OP here. It can seem scattered but a lot of kids to to Davis square on the shuttle or walk, or take the train to Harvard from there etc. I dont really love Boston i think its a great town for college kids

OP here - so interesting how a mediocre tour guide can change a kid's entire perspective. My kid says the parties are not really at Tufts ..she has now settled into a more rigorous second semester but first semester they were all going to Harvard and MIT for parties. Amazing smart kids. Not competitive and gatekeeping...collaborative learning. Its not too huge and not too small. Harvard/MIT etc there was zero chance for my daughter so she considers herself lucky to get in at Tufts. Her hs friends who go to MIT and Harvard also love those schools as well as BC and BU. Anyway, just wanted to give it a shout out on this board. Go Jumbos!

My kid loved his Tufts visit. It’s his second choice after Brown. We live in a big city and he thought both Brown and Tufts had sort of cute, low-key urban vibes. And he loved the collaborative spirit of both. But I do wonder about how a weird tour guide etc can throw off one’s whole opinion of a school. We had a weird tour guide at Amherst and then the school quickly fell off the list, for reasons I see as silly and superficial. (Amherst would be my first choice for him! But of course would be thrilled for Brown or Tufts to work out.)

My kid liked the location of the campus. It has a T stop directly on campus and is close to both the shops of Davis and nature/parks of Medford. The whole area is pedestrian and bike friendly. It’s also easy to visit friends at MIT or Harvard or go downtown via the T. My son also liked how the campus is perched on a hill and finds it neither too big nor too small. Is Tufts architecture as gorgeous as Yale or Princeton? No, but he couldn’t get into those schools so it’s silly to make that comparison.

As a parent, I couldn’t love the school more. My daughter is a very happy junior majoring in math but also taking engineering classes. To the PP, I’m sorry about the students you met but I don’t feel that experience is typical. There is such a range of studies that it seems more to me like everyone is focused on their own unique path rather than competing.

When we visited Boston area schools it was #1 on our child's list. After the visit, it dropped off their list completely. On the top of a windy hill,l and not actually in Boston, looks/feels more like a hodgepodge than a school community, and the students we met were ultra competitive rather than collaborative, which is what was the final nail in the coffin for our kid. I dont see Tufts mentioned on this board a lot but if you its in the decision pool i just wanted to give a shoutout - the professors are great and deeply caring and overall my child is absolutely loving it there. The campus is not in the heart of Boston but there is a T train stop right on campus and its easy to get to the city. Good luck to all students making their choices.
