It is not needed for someone who borrows a vehicle and is not a drivers license-holding resident of the household of the person who owns the car. If someone who lives in your household and has a license but no insurance of their own borrows your car and crashes - that will be a problem.

I've heard of parents removing their students when they go to college and adding them back when they come up for breaks.

I remember USAA having some discount for this scenario - I think a small discount (maybe $100.00 or something like that). Better than nothing, but nothing crazy.

AAA has a discount for students without a car at college IF the campus is 100 miles away or more.

You can request a discount for "college student living away from home without a car."

Don't expect to earn a ton back, but going without insurance is rather risky.

Our car insurance increased substantially when our teen got her license. She's going to college this summer and won't have a car. She'll drive our car periodically when she comes home for breaks. Can we remove her from insurance?
