But how will families be able to make decisions about whether to accept CES spots if they don't know what their home school will be doing for enrichment? Obviously some would pick CES no matter what, but others would prefer to stay at the home school if they know the child will be in ELC but maybe not if they are just getting some occasional pullout time...

Maybe at your school. I am happy with the ELC at my child’s school. Like the creativity, books, and teacher is wonderful.

Have they confirmed whether or not they're continuing it next year?

Haven’t heard anything yet, but knowing our school, they will probably go back to no differentiation in a heartbeat. Before 4th grade when there was no ELC and CM, they did not see anything wrong with letting iep students wander around interrupting class and tried to reprimand me for complaining. No learning was done and it was a big hang out.

My kid will be in MS magnet next year so I no longer have a dog in this fight, but I feel sorry for those that do not get a seat in the CES lottery.

This is what I keep saying. It makes no sense to remove ELC from 4th and 5th grade. If they want to use different curriculum, maybe. But changing how the program is supposed to function overall doesn’t make sense. Especially when all schools haven’t implemented WIN/FIT time in a meaningful way.

CKLA is a better curriculum for on level absolutely. But if there are students who are ready for quicker deeper learning at age 9/10 why hold them back. The point is to remove barriers for everyone not make everyone the same.

+1

Having a separate class for advanced learners provides for meaningful acceleration and enrichment. I now have a middle schooler and see what a joke “advanced” English for all is—nothing andvanced about it. I suspect it is the same is true with “honors” English for all in high school. I certainly hope MCPS is not moving backwards for 4/5 ELC.

Why does it feel like this changes every 2-3 years. Is it just me? Can’t imagine how teachers feel getting whiplashed from one model/program/curriculum to another all the time.

Anonymous wrote:Our school doesn’t separate kids except during math. For ELA they have a 30 minute weekly block called “FIT” which stands for flexible intervention time. At BTSN they said this was when they taught students English. My kid that qualified for ELC started moving to another classroom in October for novel studies. I haven’t seen my kid read any novels or take home anything from this FIT time.

Like a PP I don’t care what the curriculum is, but being in the right cohort is super important for my 2E kid. The bullying that happens in the full homeroom is not worth any curriculum.

I’m jealous of the schools like Flora Singer that still have kids in separate cohorts for the ELA time everyday. I think especially in 5th grade it preps them for MS. I think all of the MCPS elementary schools should departmentalize for 5th grade like Poolesville ES

FIT is supposed to be every day. Is it really only once a week for you, or did you mean daily rather than weekly?

I do not think very many decisions about next year have been made yet. There is still so much shuffling and uncertainty in CO and staffing for school based has not been given to principals. It would be hard for any school team to plan much for next school year with so much uncertainty.

MCPS hasn't announced anything. You should call the Office of Accelerated and Enriched Instruction to ask -- they are the ones who expanded ELC to all schools a few years ago. They will know what is going on now.

Mine said they were doing “enriched CKLA” basically adding novel studies on. But it’s not clear that those kids will be in a separate cohort. I don’t care what curriculum they’re using honestly, I just want my kid to be in a group that moves quicker and doesn’t have to slow down because others are not yet there. I truly believe both slower learners and gifted kids need tailored supports. It helps no one to keep them all together

Our school is piloting CKLA this year. My kid loved ELC and dislikes CKLA. Less room for creativity although the excerpts they read are from literature ie Don Quixote etc. they have read two novels so far. No pullouts or enrichment that we have been told about.

What are folks hearing about what schools will be doing next year for 4th and 5th graders for literacy enrichment? It sounds like schools are not required to offer ELC anymore, but are they allowed to? (Is Central Office telling them not to use ELC or urging them not to, does anyone know?)

Are any schools definitely doing ELC next year? For schools that are not doing ELC, will they still be doing a cohort for the enriched kids or is it just some pullout time (how much)? What are the explanations folks are hearing from their schools about why they're planning what they're planning for next year?
