As someone who does hiring, I hate cover letters. I prefer the resume, interview and then if interview goes well we may ask for more info.

I'm at offer stage with a bunch of companies so clearly my policy has not hurt me. I just think it's absolute bs to waste people's time on this. If you cant tell from their resume then find the ones that seem the best, take 15 mins out of your time or ask recruitment, and do a screener. That way it's worth it for them as well.

I spent 5 hours on my coverletter last week. I can't see how 5 min would produce something that represents my attention to detail, which is my strength.

I truly can’t remember the last time I’ve written a cover letter. Either my resume and LinkedIn showcase my skills or I’m unqualified.

If it’s absolutely necessary, have ChatGPT write the letter.

You don't owe a cover letter any more than they owe a job.

I make my decision about whom to interview based on the cover letter. It’s invaluable.

It’s ridiculous given that most applications are only read by an AI. Would suggest just having ChatGPT write it and let the AIs talk to each other.

Cover letters and references are so passé. Who makes the decisions about these things and why haven't they retired?

A cover letter is easy and a way to highlight how your skillset applies to a role and grab an employers attention. It only takes 5 min to modify a letter for a job. I found the entire job hunt painful (still do as I’m about to start over again) but it’s not because of cover letters. It was the ridiculous online job apps that are like college applications and require to basically retype your resume only to then require you to upload it.

In this age of horrible ROI from job applications, I find it borderline insane to require a cover letter.
