You might like the Rex Parker does the NYT crossword puzzle website. He’s pretty tart with his reviews, and very opinionated, so not everyone’s cup of tea. Comments are worth a read though.

No, but you will get things like words being jumbled, multiple letters in a square (rebus), words turning corners and various other things. As PP said, that kind of thing usually appeared on Thursdays, but now Wednesdays too. Other days have themes but usually simpler. Friday and Saturdays are the only themeless puzzles and usually the hardest of the week. Sundays are basically big Wednesdays.

Rebus puzzles are GENERALLY on Thursdays.

Mondays are the easiest, Saturdays are the hardest, Sundays are the biggest, and Thursdays (sometimes Wednesdays or Fridays) are the trickiest.

It used to just be that Thursday puzzles had tricks like this. Lately, Wednesdays have been adding them in too. I like the tricky ones, but would just prefer one day a week!

It was kind of an obvious theme. That particular answer was literally long “time” no see. Other theme answers were the same. If you used the app the answers all displayed the stretched words once you completed the puzzle.
