It changes the recruiting. Coaches are taking proven kids. It has changed a lot in the last 3 years.

+1

It has substantially changed HS recruiting for D1 and D2. Maybe not as much for D3.

I’m in California and here, a lot of kids are going to very good community college programs and getting picked up that way. They can get recruited out of the transfer portal so it’s a much smarter way to get to a D1 team now. But, it’s a risk because you might not get picked up at all. I’m not sure how common that is elsewhere; I get the sense the California community college system is more heavily used than in other places.

For D2 it’s a mixed bag. The CSU D2 conference is very good, probably one of the best D2 conferences in the country, but they tend to recruit entirely in California so there are HS kids getting picked up there. However, California is huge with a very deep soccer culture, so I’m not sure how that applies elsewhere.

D3 is a different matter. Plenty of recruiting of HS kids at that level.

Yes I was catching up with a friend who’s kid was a high QB recruit in California. He ended up at a JuCo to get “starter” tape to enter the portal. Now he just wants to get to a good d1 school for the education value. He said the top recruits are getting NIL money really early in the process. Everything is changing fast. It is out of the NCAA hands and is now an arms race between agents and coaches. I imagine the same thing will happen will all the sports.

on the girls side they can usually get picked up by a less talented program, but the 28 rosters spots will make it more difficult.

It is not really that competitive in terms of talent. I know that may seem shocking but there are a lot of college soccer players. It is not like the professional games. Look at how many ECNL players end up in college.

For boy's soccer, unless you are the best player on an MLS next team, you're not getting recruited.

You'll see the impacts within the next few graduating classes. It's a numbers game, before certain schools carried an insane amount of players for their programs. These next few years with players losing their spots and entering the portal will reduce numbers, less spots overall, internationals, so on and so forth.
