So how are you managing it? Medication?

Ask your doctor about LADA/ type 1.5 diabetes.

Agree. A1c tests levels for the prior 3 months so fasting for 12 or 13 hours should have an insignificant impact.

A1c is not impacted by fasting.
Ask your doctor about LADA/ type 1.5 diabetes.

A lot of people don't do that. They'll eat dinner at 8 or 9 PM and then having "fasting" bloodwork at 7 am the next morning.

My doctor doesn't even like for me to brush my teeth or use mouthwash the night before or morning of my fasting bloodwork.

And also, I'm like you PP. Very normal weight and very healthy lifestyle and I'm pre-diabetic. Diabetes does run in my family, though. And to make things even crazier, my sister is overweight and is a T1D. Those 2 things almost never go together. You can do everything right in life and genetics will still give you a kick in the pants.

I actually did 13 hours! I only had water not 13 hours. Although I do think I brushed my teeth twice. I will avoid that this time around, so thank you for that tip. Shockingly my doctor actually says fasting isn’t even necessary AND SHE ACTUALLY DOESN’T RECOMMEND IT, which is nuts to me. I don’t know how they can get an accurate reading from your blood unless you’re fasting.

This doctor needs to be fired, don’t you think?

Genetics.

You need medication.

It happens.

Yes, but I'd like to start making lifestyle changes now while I'm waiting the 6 weeks.

If your doctor thought there were lifestyle changes you should make in the meantime, they would tell you. It sounds like your lifestyle is pretty healthy so maybe they don’t think that’s the culprit or the solution.

If you’re someone who likes to fret, get a glucose monitor. Test yourself upon waking and an hour after each meal, and keep a log. Then you’ll have something to do and a bunch of data for your doctor (which they probably don’t need but can’t hurt).

I’d get an independent opinion from a functional medicine doctor, or a different type of doctor not beholden to the AMA and pharma oligarchs.

Mainstream medicine is frequently adjusting numbers to get increased research funding. Beware. Profits are paramount to them.

Yes, I did fast before the blood draw. I do not remember what I ate the night before.
I eat very little processed foods -- the doc asked me that. GF bread and cereal and maybe some deli meat is about as processed as I eat.

Post 02/18/2025 11:53     Subject: why am I pre-diabetic?

I was shocked to get my bloodwork results and my A1C is 5.9, which is in the pre-diabetic range. I am a 43 year old female and my lifestyle is extremely healthy. Can someone more knowledgeable about diabetes please try to help me understand what I can do to reverse this and avoid getting full-blown diabetes?

I weigh 120 pounds and I'm 5'5"
I walk minimum 40 minutes every day of the week.
Plus I'm on my feet all day, going up and down flights of stairs many times a day.
I do strength training 3-4 days a week
I don’t drink any alcohol
I don’t eat fast food or fried foods
I don’t eat white bread/pasta/rice (I try to eat as little gluten as possible but I'm not completely GF)
I eat very few sweets (only dark chocolate & dates)
I don’t drink any sugary drinks
I get plenty of sleep
I drink tons of water

I’m so confused as to what is the explanation for my increased A1c number. We have no family history of diabetes. I didn't have it when pregnant. I want to do everything I can to avoid getting diabetes or having to go on medication. Can you please suggest some other things besides what I’ve already listed above? I'm having my bloodwork repeated in 6 weeks.
