OMG. Some of the “advice” on this thread is ridiculous. There is no reason to deride a country just because you prefer the other option. Either are great options but very different destinations. I think the best question asked is the time of year you’d be traveling since Romania is generally colder than Turkey.

In Romania most people focus on Transylvania. Most stay in Brasov, though I prefer Sibui. They visit Bran Castle, Sighisoara, some of the fortified churches built by the Germans, and go hiking in the mountains.

With only four or five days, you’d likely stay in Istanbul and not explore other parts of Turkey. Istanbul is an incredible city and much more urban than anything in Romania. The major attractions of Istanbul are pretty well known so I won’t go through that. I do prefer the food in Istanbul FWIW.

If you go to Bulgaria, you’d be getting a hybrid of each. And the food in Bulgaria is among the best in the world.

OP here. Just came back from Vienna. Found it boring and too quiet, an eerie vibe to it.

Although going in the middle of February didn’t help.

If you enjoyed your visit to Austria and want to replicate that experience to a minor extent, then Romania is the better choice.

So I love both. But Istanbul is one of the greatest cities in the world. If you choose one, go there.

Both will be different from the other countries you visited. It depends on season, and how easy flights will be. I’d go for Istanbul if it’s not summer. If summer, Romania.
