UGA and Clemson are the two schools were deferrals often do pan out in RD.

That’s the problem with anecdotes. Some kids prefer UGA over Michigan, UVA, UNC.

It is my kids number one. Knows of 4 kids from 2 years ago who were accepted with RD from our HS.

The wait is excruciating.

Same- and I have a kid there now. What is your kid's second choice? Where else are they in?

We are OOS and one of DC's friends was offered a place on the waitlist in RD after being deferred in EA. They declined the spot and enrolled at another school.

I know a number of high stats kids who are holding onto a UGA admit as a back-up. There is log jam of deferrals--most of these kids are deferred from their top state school choice of Michigan, UVA, UNC and also have top20 RD applications pending. If some of these spots open up they'll release UGA.

I think it’s going to be hard for OOS in the regular round. They defer a lot. And need to end up 80% in state kids. Around 4500 out of state offers went out in early round.
My kid is also deferred and it is their number one.

It's no secret that UGA is much more competitive in recent years. Their admissions director used to be quite active on Twitter/X, but like many others, he doesn't post as often since a certain individual ruined the platform.

Just have your kid submit the update and hope for the best. Strong first semester grades will also go a long way. Good luck!

Our oos school gets 10+ kids in at EA and another 10+ kids in March. There is some randomness on both sides. I've seen absolutely stellar candidates not get in either round (still scratching my head on some) and the reverse. I've known people to update their grades to show all As senior year - and it didn't help. At the end of the day, I think your application has already been scored and when they admit the regular pool, the cutoff for the admits will go down and with some luck, you will get in RD. If you are allowed to send in a letter of continuing interest of some sort, by all means tell them it is your number 1 choice - I've actually heard this from a counselor.

Thanks for the well wishes, this post gives me hope, but the quote above is from 2009 so I worry that things have tightened up as they have so many more apps. I need to just be patient. And I know it will all work out because there are other good options on the table.

We are definitely moving forward with being excited about other schools. I'm still hoping they still take a high volume of deferrals. The update they sent UGA was strong.

Also still waiting on VT this week.

I have no info or experience with UGA specifically. But at most schools, almost all deferrals lead to rejections. Georgetown, which accepts more deferred students than perhaps any other school, takes only 15% in the RD round.

I would advise you to focus your energy and attention on other options, and try to get excited (and get your kid excited) about them.

Not my kid but I do know a kid who was deferred wrote in his letter the equivalent of "I love this school for these reasons and if I get in I am 100% coming" and got in. He's thriving there.
