A lot of kids leave Ross but they don't fill the seats with out of bounds kids. Since the 2019-20 school year, they have made 0 offers for 3rd or 5th. You can see all the data at enrolldcps.dc.gov/node/61

Completely untrue. They go through most of their 5th grade wait-list. Lived this, and know others who got in in 5th.

Lots of people are trying to do what you are trying to do. There is no secret amazing school where you have a good chance. Play the lotto, see if you get lucky (having two kids helps) and figure out if your backup plan is your in-bound school or something else.

OP asked for schools with decent MS/HS feed.

Terrible commute and McArthur is not an acceptable high school

Anonymous wrote:I’d apply the 3rd grader for 12 DCPS elementary schools that feed decent middle schools. Might also consider Inspired Teaching and SWW@FS and its feeders. The 5th grader you can apply for the same list or put Latin/BASIS on your list if they’re a fit and you’re ok having the kids in different places. If you’re leaving again in a few years I wouldn’t worry about HS feed. If you’re planning to stay I’d prioritize a decent high school.

If one kid gets into a school that has the other grade but the other kid didn’t lottery for it, I believe you can do a post-lottery app and sibling preference will pull you to the front of the line.

Come on, there are not 12 DCPS schools that feed into decent middle/high schools.

Reality is the only decent middle school in the lottery is DCI, Latin, and Basis. The chances OP gets her 5th grader into Latin or Basis is low and Basis might not even be a good fit for her kid.

Lastly OP trying to get your kid into feeders for Deal and the commuting is a nightmare if you are EOTP.

Your best bet is as I said above living in burbs with secure pyramid up to 12th or living WOTP.

If you don’t do above, your kid can go to your IB or whatever school you get in the lottery with horrible commute and then you will end up moving for middle if you don’t get schools above. This is so, so disruptive for your kids and not something I would recommend.

Do you have to live in the District (coming back to a house you still own?)
I love living in NE DC, but the middle to high school sitch is not great.
I did recently learn that you can attend DCI as a freshman never having studied the language... a dad told me his son got a slot in French that way.

For 5th, do basis and both latins. Not sure inspired teaching would be stellar enough for you but maybe. Then look at hardy and deal feeders and hope you get lucky. Maybe Francis Stevens and Stuart Hobson and Wells feeders depending on your commute.

I haven't participated in the lottery since the kids were entering Pre-K. What schools have the best chance at entry in these later grades that have a decent MS-HS feeder pattern?

Thanks in advance for any guidance, suggestions, and personal anecdotes.

None with this late in elementary. You missed the chance at getting into the immersion charters at ECE.

You need to live in the burbs or WOTP.
