New cars are expected to go up in price due to tariffs, so used cars will too. About $3000-$7000 increase, I read.

If there’s a specific car you want, do a national search. For example, there’s one BMW dealership in Texas that seems to get a lot of vehicles just off the lease. I think it might handle a lot of pre-owned processing and redistribution to dealerships.

The best deals will often involve a one way flight.

People need to buy cars to RTO.

I'm not sure why you would expect the cost of used cars to decline. People in financial hardship who are looking for cars are more likely to buy used than new.

Things take time. I actually think the used car market is going to get better but based on COVID era expensive loans handed out too freely, finally reaching unsustainability. Repos due to finances take a long time at least 6 months to a year or more depending on when and how people stop paying their car loans. Be patient.

How many job cuts do you think there will be? Not many so far, and I doubt there will be enough to make a dent in the used car market.

Personally, with all that is happening in DC we are holding onto our used cars and have no desire to spend more on a newer car, for now.

Also, dealers are very in tune with the market and they have no desire to reduce prices of cars. You’ll have to wait until they feel the pinch.

+1 And look at how they inflated the cost of used cars during COVID. Bottom feeders.

I don't know when we had hard times at our house we sold our European car and bought cheaper ones like a Honda.

After transaction costs, what did that actually put in your pocket?

But surprisingly, dealers aren’t budging on prices for used BMWs, Audis, or Volvos—no discounts, no negotiation.

Even with high interest rates and supposed job fears, used car prices seem unaffected. In fact, someone even bought one of the used BMWs we were looking at for full sticker price before we could act.

At the same time, I haven’t noticed a surge in used car listings from private sellers on Autotrader or Facebook Marketplace. Maybe cars in this $40K–$50K range are just holding steady, or maybe wealthier buyers are trying to lower their costs by shopping in this price bracket instead of buying new.

Are others seeing the same? Is the fear overblown, or is the used car market just immune to it?
