Why not go for UMD? Cheaper (assuming in state; if not, it's at least closer) and arguably more prestigious, ENGR and otherwise.

I have a son there, 1400 is not in the range - get a tutor and try again, you have plenty of time to bring it up.

I'm the pp whose son had a 35 ACT and was deferred (so not "safe") but ultimately got in. My son is not Asian.

Race and gender don’t matter. You need strong stats and a strong application.

1400 is unlikely to be fine for any race applying to Purdue engineering OOS.

In-state admissions is much easier than OOS. The average is brought down by the low in-state stats. OOS needs top grades and test scores.

I’m the PP. Agreed. I should have specified that any applicant needs to be above that published range.

My kid is in the Wheaton engineering magnet and says he has a few friends who’ve gotten in.

Nope. Definitely not safe.

Unfortunately I don’t think it is right now, but you really never know! My sophomore DS is in MechE at Purdue. Got in after applying RD with a 34 ACT, great grades and rigor etc. We were a bit shocked. Purdue tends to over-enroll and messed up a bit last year admitting too many. So they are saying they are enrolling less, at least this year. Who knows how it will pan out and whether that happens. I see a lot of deferrals and rejections with really high stats kids. It’s such a roll of the dice.

I don't think it is, I'm sorry.
My son is a current freshman at Purdue for engineering. When he applied last year, he had a 35 on the ACT (36 STEM composite score.) He was deferred in early admission, but did ultimately get accepted in regular admission. From my understanding, a 35 is approximately equivalent to 1530-1560 on the SAT.

Is a 1400 on the SAT safe?
