I am really interested in seeing the showdown between DOGE and DOD. Talk about being in the FO part of FAFO...

I wish you well, but what you describe (core function, no fat) isn't unique. It just comes down to whether Trump or Musk see you as an enemy. I would have thought everybody in DOJ saw that up close.

Wait until you prosecute the “wrong” case.

Patent Office, fee for need, constitutional mandate, boring politically.

If there are RIFs years of service are taken into account. So if you are a DOD employee with 20 years of service you are a lot safer from being laid off than a Dept of education employee still within the probationary period.

Secret service and other similar agencies should have plenty of work.

Healthcare professionals are probably less in jeopardy of being RiF’d.

I also think that Elon has plenty of ideas about how many feds he’s going to be able to fire. I don’t believe him that he will actually be able to do so.

That’s because we’re preparing for war with China.

I feel reasonably safe as a criminal AUSA. We perform a core constitutional function and there’s really no fat to cut. Every attorney in my office works 60 hours a week, save for a handful of people in highly niche roles.

I don't know of any safe jobs aside from legislative branch.

Have seen several posts lately from feds who think their positions are mostly safe. By now, we all know agencies that are in serious jeopardy (USAID, OPM, GSA, Ed, etc.) but I’m curious what these jobs are that people view as protected? With the exception of immigration-focused or non-executive branch agencies, I’m not seeing many. Even places not typically targeted by republicans (DOD, CIA, NOAA, etc.) seem to be drawing DOGE attention.
