I have an expensive Electrolux front loader that is very slow, but does a great job cleaning clothes. On the other hand, I’ve had a GE front loader that was crap, and two different HE top loaders that were worse than crap. Not only didn’t clean, but damaged clothes. I gave away an almost brand new HE top loader and got a Speed Queen to replace it and have been very happy.

I have a top load Samsung without an agitator and I use a speed queen at another house. They’re both fine. This isn’t that complicated. The speed queen uses more water and agitates more aggressively. I think most of our clothes don’t need that and I have to believe it contributes some to wear and tear. For major stains, it’s still mostly about pretreating and choosing the right chemical weapons.

I got a top load GE with agitator and it cleans very well. I decided against Speed Queen because of the smaller capacity. Mine was from Costco, very similar to this:

+1. Keep the door and detergent tray propped immediately after washing -- it's a pain, but makes all the difference in keeping mold away.

Just came here to echo Speed Queen as the typical response. To be clear, Speed Queen is not cheap (both in terms of the upfront COST and the relatively higher water bill that you will face) but they are well-built and they last a long time. They also clean clothes very well, which is a big criticism of the HE washing machine.

We have a speed queen we bought right before they started changing the models, but in the past, we’d had luck with the basic agitator style whirlpools.

Just get a basic top loader with agitator. I wanted a Speed Queen but decided to get a cheaper GE. So far so good, but I’ve had it for less than a year.

I bought a fancy Maytag Bravo HE when it first came out. Paid a pretty penny for it too.
It lasted just until the warranty ran out, then it broke. The repairs were more than the cost of a new machine.
We ended up ditching the HE model and replacing it with a cheap $300.00 Hotpoint base model, 2 setting, 3 water levels, top loader with center agitator.
The first load we did, I was blown away with how fresh and clean everything smalled. You forget what clean laundry smells like when you are using one of those worthless HE washers.
One added benefit with the basic center agitator models it that if they break or need a new belt, they are a simple and cheap DIY fix.
Does Speed Queen still make a basic, center agitator no frills model?

Same. Got mine 2 years ago. My clothes are clean again.

I have one of those older models too and wish I had bought a second set as a backup. They redesigned it and the newer ones don't work the same. Can't recommend them anymore but I love mine.

Need to replace 12YO LG washer. The LG is “HE” which means ocassional smelly clothes, routine tub cleanings, etc. We want to purchase the old fashioned non HE washing machines. We were thinking of Speed Queen. Any thoughts, recommendations? Tia
